MITACS Funding Opportunities

Posted Jan 11 2010 in Scholarship News

MITACS is funded by both the Industry Canada's Networks of Centres of Excellence Program (NCE) for research, networking and training in the mathematical sciences but also through other federal and provincial agencies and departments for programs available to researchers in all academic disciplines. There are several grad student-related MITACS funding opportunities, specifically:

Graduate Training Events:

Funding for funding for summer schools, tutorials, workshops, short courses or other similar events that provide graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with technical training that augments their program of study.

Deadlines are April 30 and September 10, 2010

For more information, visit www.mitacs.ca/goto/calls.

MITACS Accelerate:

Provides graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with the opportunity to apply their research to challenges faced by companies For each four month internship, the partner company and MITACS contribute $7,500, which provides a $15,000 grant to the intern's professor. The intern receives a minimum of $10,000 of the grant, with the remaining $5,000 supporting other costs associated with the research 4 month internship units can be combined into longer projects. Proposals are accepted at any time.

For more information, visit mitacsaccelerate.ca.

Internship Clusters:

Internship clusters require a minimum of $30,000 from a partner company and provide enhanced funding leverage combined with the ACCELERATE program's flexibility. (Please speak directly with the Business Development Director listed below to discuss your particular project and learn more.)

Furthermore, the MITACS ACCELERATE Nova Scotia program is currently seeking proposals from professors and graduate students/postdocs in any faculty or department for research projects conducted in collaboration with Nova Scotia companies. This innovative internship program funds 4, 8, 12, 16 or 24-month research projects.

MITACS ACCELERATE is open to all university faculties and departments that train graduate students including Arts, Engineering, Humanities, Physical Sciences, Applied Sciences, Social Sciences and many more. The Program has supported student internships in fields as diverse as carbon footprint analysis, modelling of invasive species propagation, public policy in education, software engineering, fluid dynamics, national security, minimizing iceberg risks to offshore drilling equipment, process optimization in manufacturing, and a host of other projects which cover all fields of applied academic research.

The MITACS ACCELERATE benefits for professors and grad students/postdocs:

  • Leverages your existing funding from industry
  • Provides funding of a grad student/post-doc
  • Provides valuable career opportunities for grad students and postdocs
  • The application process has limited paperwork and offers quick turnaround times (usually not more than 6 weeks).
  • Proposals are accepted at any time
  • Foreign grad students can participate
  • Can help professors attract grad students and postdocs to their university through conditional pre-approvals of internship funding

Details:

The student intern, under the supervision of a faculty member, spends approximately half of his/her time over a minimum four-month period onsite with an eligible Nova Scotia company or in the field, developing a better understanding of a jointly-identified research problem of importance to the partner. The balance of the intern's time is spent at the university with a professor, developing a solution to the company's challenge.

The partner's contribution of $7.5K per four-month internship is matched by MITACS, for a total MITACS ACCELERATE award of $15,000. The intern receives a minimum $10,000 stipend, with the remaining $5,000 supporting other costs associated with the project.

Although internship proposals are accepted at any time, it is strongly recommended that applicants contact Ian Baird (coordinates below) at least 8 weeks before the intended date of project commencement. This will allow adequate time for peer-review and transfer of funds to the university. The MITACS business development team will assist you with the application process. However, every effort is made to review proposals as quickly as possible.

For more information, contact Ian Baird, Director of Business Development for Nova Scotia, at ibaird@mitacs.ca or 506-458-7280.
