These awards are also intended to support students who have been involved in co-operatives, preferably in leadership positions as volunteers or employees. The Kowalsky Program for the Study of Eastern Ukraine was established in 1998 on the basis of a donation by Michael Kowalsky (1908–2000) and Daria Mucak-Kowalsky. The Program, which supports Ukrainian studies and the national revival in eastern Ukraine, established the Kowalsky Eastern Ukrainian Institute at Kharkiv University in 1999 to direct and co-ordinate work and activities there. The Program gives grants to scholars, sponsors seminars, and supports museum development and publications, including the journal Схід-Захід ( East-We st ) . In 2003 the Kowalsky Eastern Institute established a Zaporizhia branch that is active in publishing and fieldwork, including the compiling and publication of oral history sources. As World War I ended, The National Chapter of Canada IODE initiated a living memorial to 60,000 Canadians whose lives were sacriï¬ced. This War Memorial, approved at the 1918 Annual Meeting in Montreal, provided bursaries for university studies in Canada to children of men killed or permanently disabled in the Great War. Immediately, a campaign to raise $500,000 began, and by 1920 the ï¬rst bursaries were awarded. Each province was assigned one award of $250 a year for four years (later increased to $300). Where there was no candidate, the bursary went to another province.

In November 1998, with a recommendation to expand the program to three scholarships annually, the Robbie Thompson Scholarship was added. In October 1997 The “Shell” Transport and Trading Company plc celebrated its centenary. In order to mark this in a lasting and meaningful way the Royal Dutch Shell Group of Companies established The Shell Centenary Scholarship Fund (TSCSF). This, through its contributions towards the cost of scholarships, supports educational advancement and co-operation worldwide by providing opportunities for graduate students from overseas to study in the United Kingdom and The Netherlands. In TSCSF’s scholarship programme, applicants compete for scholarships offered at selected universities. The total number of scholarships supported has increased over the years as additional universities have been brought into the programme.
At Imperial College London four scholarships are now jointly funded by TSCSF, Imperial College and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and two scholarships are funded by TSCSF and Imperial College. Across the programme it is the intention that the scholarships be widely geographically distributed. In each year a large number of countries will be represented. Scholarships will be awarded to those academically qualified applicants thought best able to contribute to the sustainable development of their home country by becoming leaders, decision makers or opinion-formers.

The Faculty of Graduate Studies offers $2.2M in new and continuing University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowships (UMGF) each year to meritorious students for full-time study and/or research (which includes works that are considered creative endeavors) leading to a graduate degree. Awards are made on the basis of academic excellence, and are open to students who will be registered as full-time graduate students (Masters or Ph.D.) at the University of Manitoba regardless of nationality or discipline during tenure of the award. Students must be recommended by their department to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Only students with a minimum GPA of 3.75 (above B+) in the last two completed years of study at a recognized university based on a Bachelor, Masters, Graduate Diploma or Doctoral degree will be recommended. Competition for the UMGF is strong each year and there are always many more students recommended than there are available awards. Students recommended for the UMGF by their Department are automatically considered for the Manitoba Graduate Scholarship (MGS).
